BLUETEC Brings Diesel to California
In October the E 320 BLUETEC became the world’s first — and so far only — diesel vehicle to make its market debut in California. In other words, Mercedes-Benz has become the first automaker to offer a diesel engine that meets California’s strict emission limits.
Since the large-scale introduction of low-sulfur diesel fuel in October 2006, the E 320 BLUE?TEC has already become available in 45 U.S. states. Equipped with a 165 kW/224 hp V6 engine, the E 320 BLUETEC consumes just 6.7 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers and can cover up to 1,200 kilometers on a single tank of fuel. This level of fuel efficiency scores high with American customers. In fact, sales of the E 320 BLUE?TEC now account for 17 percent of E-Class sales in the U.S.
BLUETEC is a modular exhaust gas treatment system that substantially reduces not only particulate emissions but also the emissions of nitrogen oxides. These are the only design-inherent types of diesel engine emissions that still exceed the equivalent values in gasoline engines.
