BlueTEC: From the Land of Ideas
The “Germany — Land of Ideas” initiative has presented an award for innovative research to Mercedes-Benz in connection with the launch of BlueTEC technology in Europe in the fall of 2007. The initiative, whose patron is German president Horst Köhler, honored the BlueTEC system created by Daimler researchers and developers because it enables Mercedes-Benz to build the world’s cleanest diesel vehicles.
BlueTEC is a modular concept that employs various steps.
The process begins with engine-internal measures that minimize raw emissions. An oxidizing catalytic converter and particulate filter then implement effective exhaust gas aftertreatment, after which an extremely long-lasting NOx storage catalytic converter and a special SCR (selective catalytic reduction) catalytic converter reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. The resulting NOx levels are well below the maximum levels permitted by the EU5 standard, and the technology even has the potential to meet the future, more stringent EU6 norm.
“Germany — Land of Ideas” is a cross-party initiative of the German federal government and German industry designed to enhance the country’s image and attractiveness as a business location. Since 2006, the initiative has presented awards for innovative ideas that display creative passion and innovative thinking.
