Battery breakthrough:
S 400 BlueHYBRID with lithium-ion technology

In cooperation with Continental, Daimler has become the world’s first manufacturer to adapt the lithium-ion technology previously found mostly in consumer electronics products to the demanding requirements of the automotive sector. The new compact batteries will be used in series production of the Mercedes-Benz S 400 BlueHYBRID production car starting in 2009.
This success is primarily due to Daimler’s successful integration of lithium-ion batteries into the vehicle’s climate control system. This ensures that the battery always works at optimal system temperatures of 15 to 35 degrees Celsius, which in turn enables it to offer the long service life and top performance required for passenger car applications.
Daimler currently holds 25 patents that have led to the breakthrough in this important technology. “This has given us a groundbreaking technology that will play a decisive role in the future success of the automotive industry,” says Dr. Thomas Weber, Daimler Board of Management member responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.
