Economical gasoline and clean diesel
Combustion engines have become even more efficient and cleaner over recent years. In the coming decades they will be supplemented with hybrid, battery and fuel-cell vehicles, since we believe a mixture of drives is the way forward. We therefore aim to work intensively on this technology in the future too, optimizing fuel consumption and emissions even further.

BLUETEC-technology for diesel engines has combined optimized combustion with exhaust gas aftertreatment, thereby enabling production of the world’s cleanest diesel vehicles. The key technology for gasoline engines today is the newly developed spray-guided direct injection system known as stratified charged gasoline injection (CGI), which reduces fuel consumption while also improving driving performance. The F 700 research vehicle features a forward-looking engine concept that combines and exploits the benefits of diesel and gasoline engines and is known as the DIESOTTO drive system. Thus equipped, the F 700, which is similar to the current S-Class series, achieves fuel consumption of only 5.3 liters per 100 kilometers, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of just 127 grams per kilometer.
