smart fortwo mhd: clever start/stop system
In the smart fortwo mhd (micro hybrid drive), a belt-driven starter-generator replaces the starter and alternator. This saves weight and above all fuel. When the sporty two-seater finds itself at a red stop light, or comes to a standstill in stop-and-go traffic, the combustion engine automatically switches off during such idling phases. As soon as the driver releases the brake pedal, the electric motor acts as the starter and switches the engine back on in a fraction of a second. During normal driving, the electric motor transforms into the generator and provides the battery with power. In this way, fuel consumption is reduced to 4.3 liters per 100 kilometers – this equates to CO2 emissions of just 103 grams per kilometer.

Saving fuel even at a standstill: Inconspicuous but effective. A small electronic box lies at the heart of the intelligent automatic start/stop system in the smart mhd. The electronic system uses idling phases to save fuel, thus reducing fuel consumption by up to 19 percent in urban traffic.
