At the end of 2009, more than 100 electric cars from Mercedes-Benz and smart featuring lithium-ion batteries will embark on the world's largest joint project for climate-friendly electric drives in Berlin. Energy provider RWE is to build around 500 charging stations for the project. | |

e-mobility in Italy From 2010, more than 100 electric cars from smart and Mercedes-Benz will hit the roads in Rome, Milan and Pisa. The aim of the project is to develop the vehicle technology and infrastructure further. Italy's largest energy supplier, Enel, is also taking part in the project. | |

Pilot project in London
Since 2007, selected customers in London have been testing a fleet of 100 smart electric drive cars with a high-performance sodium/nickel chloride battery. The small runarounds do not produce any emissions and are therefore exempt from the city's congestion charge. | |
