Hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles can also achieve zero-emission operation over longer distances. In a fuel cell, hydrogen and oxygen combine in a controlled chemical reaction to create water vapor. As part of this process, the energy contained in the hydrogen is released as electrical energy and can be used to drive an electric motor. Hydrogen is therefore being recommended as the fuel of the future, since it can be made independently of fossil fuel sources and does not generate any emissions during driving. If the hydrogen is produced from renewable sources, then it is even possible to achieve zero-emission mobility. For several years Daimler has been testing a variety of fuel cell passenger cars and buses together with customers in everyday fleet and service operations.  more
