The standardization

Standardized plugs ensure charging at any place
An essential prerequisite for the use of electric vehicles is both an area-wide infrastructure of electric charging stations plus, norms and standards that play a key role to ensure the interoperability of electric vehicles and the various systems.
This applies especially to the interface for the charging of electric vehicles with the electric grid using a common plug-socket interface. Standardized plugs are an essential condition in order to make electric vehicles suitable for the mass market and daily use.
Daimler and other partners not only work on the standardization of cables, plugs and vehicle sockets but also on an innovative overall concept for safe and comfortable charging.
The overall concept includes a customer-friendly and convenient vehicle recharging, using standardized communication technologies between the electric vehicle and the electric charging stations. The use of intelligent processes and the automatic authentication of the electric vehicles at the charge station enable a quick and simple electricity “re-fill”.
The electric charging station receives all the necessary electricity contract and vehicle charging information through the power cord. Afterwards, the charged electricity is automatically billed – without the use of any cumbersome payment systems.

Smart Charge Communication
In order to realize these customer friendly functionalities, Daimler and RWE have developed a "Smart Charge Communication Protocol" for the standardized communication between the vehicle and grid. We have published this protocol for all interested parties, to accelerate the establishment of standards and to develop this protocol further based upon the Open Source philosophy.  If you have an interest in the detailed communication protocol that is currently being developed, please follow the link below for the latest working version.
