Front Collision Guard: Unique Safety System for Buses and Coaches
Front Collision Guard (FCG) is a unique passive safety system designed to protect the driver and tour guide aboard the bus or coach in the event of a frontal impact. FCG is fitted as standard in the latest generation of Mercedes-Benz Travego, Setra TopClass 400 and Setra ComfortClass 500 touring coaches. The Front Collision Guard consists of a complex safety system.
It consists of a transverse section at the front end of the vehicle for the protection of other road users, which can prevent e.g. a car from underriding the bus. The front-end structure contains crash elements which absorb energy in a controlled manner in the event of an impact. In addition the driver's area including the steering, pedal cluster and seat is mounted on a solid frame section that can slide rearwards in its entirety in the event of a severe frontal impact, thereby maintaining the driver's survival space. The developers have not only tested the effectiveness of the Front Collision Guard in numerous simulations, but also verified the results in practice with several crash tests.
Together with Active Brake Assist, which can reduce the collision speed dramatically in the event of an unavoidable frontal collision, FCG provides the driver and tour guide with an unparalleled high standard of safety.
