Electric Drives: Concept E
Yellow Angel Award for Lithium-Ion Battery
Europe’s largest automobile association, the ADAC, has awarded its Yellow Angel 2009 in the “Innovation and Environment” category to Daimler and its system partner Continental. Daimler received the award for its lithium-ion battery, which is being incorporated into a production car for the first time worldwide. In addition to the S 400 BlueHYBRID, the pioneering technology will be employed in other vehicles such as the fuel cell-drive B-Class F-CELL and the Concept BlueZERO.

Mercedes-Benz was the first automaker in the world to succeed in adapting lithium-ion technology to the stringent demands of motor vehicles. This important technology was possible thanks to 25 patents held by Daimler.

In the “Innovation and Environment” category, ADAC honors outstanding projects in the areas of automotive development, traffic and automotive safety, and environmental protection in road transport. To receive the award, innovations must already have been successfully used in day-to-day operations. Mercedes-Benz previously received a Yellow Angel Award in 2006 for BlueTEC, the world’s cleanest diesel technology, and in 2007 for the Active Brake Assist system for trucks.
