Today's automobiles operate in a field of tension in which constantly higher, more diversified, and partly contradictory requirements are placed on their technology. Customers demand safe, comfortable, high-performance vehicles, which at the same time are to be economical and environment-friendly. And then there is the dynamically growing global need for mobility despite dwindling oil reserves, rising energy costs, and increasingly stringent regulations that are by no means uniform on an international scale. In view of these factors, the task at hand is to make the automobile fit for the future – after all, no other transport medium offers so much individual freedom. Daimler is meeting these strategic challenges in order to provide emission-free driving with no compromise in comfort, safety, or driving pleasure.
In this endeavor, Daimler is also relying on fuel cell drive technology based on hydrogen. Fuel cell vehicles are powered by an electric motor. They operate quietly and free of emissions, make for dynamic driving with excellent acceleration, and are highly efficient.
Fuel cell vehicles are now fit for everyday operation in terms of power output, safety, and functionality. With regard to operating range and longevity, too, the high demands for the future will soon be met. The task at hand is now to reduce the costs of this new technology to a level that allows fuel cell vehicles to be marketed at affordable prices.

The drive system: There are various types of fuel cell. The most frequently used type of automotive fuel cell today is the PEM fuel cell.
The fuel hydrogen: Hydrogen as an energy medium or a fuel, can secure sustainable and unrestricted mobility in fuel cell vehicles.
