The vehicles
Since their invention more than 100 years ago automotive drive systems have undergone constant development, in the course of which gasoline and diesel engines have been steadily improved. At the same time, work has repeatedly been carried out on alternative drive concepts – with varying degrees of success. With the fuel cell on board the vehicle and with hydrogen as a fuel, a promising option has become available that can have a lasting effect on mobility the world over.

History of the fuel cell at Daimler: Daimler has been developing the fuel cell drive system since the early 1990s. NECAR 1, the first fully operational fuel cell vehicle, was presented in 1994.
Vehicles in operation TODAY: Since 2003, Daimler has been the first automotive producer to operate a fleet of 100 vehicles – cars, vans, and buses – with fuel cell worldwide.
Vehicles TOMORROW: In late 2009 Daimler will launch new vehicle models fitted out with the latest generation of fuel cell drive.
Vehicles THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW: With its research and concept vehicles, Daimler provides insights into automotive innovations and technologies for the future.
Outlook: Emission-free driving with electrically powered vehicles has now come well within reach. Daimler has developed the required technology to technical maturity.
