car2gether - "Ride sharing 2.0"
The idea of the car2gether ride sharing community is to act as a broker for seats available in vehicles and, with the help of smartphone apps or a mobile website, to match suitable drivers and passengers within seconds – on the spur of the moment and even while they are out and about.

The ride sharing community was tested from the autumn of 2010 until early 2012 in the wider Ulm area and in the Aachen city region. The pilot project involved intensive testing of all the system functions as well as close cooperation with users in order to track their precise mobility needs.
With the two pilot projects for the ad-hoc ride sharing system car2gether in Ulm and Aachen, Daimler has been able to gain valuable experience in the market for ride sharing in an urban environment. In Ulm, the scope for a tie-up between car2gether and car2go was also tested, while in Aachen a link was established with the Aachen local public transport network (AVV). | ||||||||
Ride sharing is also a viable option over short distances. More than 50 percent of the car2gether trips arranged in Ulm und in Aachen were over distances of less than 10 kilometres.
A further finding: the intelligent linking of car2gether with other mobility providers was seen very positively by customers. The cooperation with mitfahrgelegenheit.de, the market leader among ride sharing brokers, and its incorporation into the Daimler mobility platform moovel (available in German only), now means that the basic idea of car2gether can be extended to cover a far wider basis and takes the concept of networked urban mobility to a whole new level.
