Dr. Jürgen Hambrecht was born 1946 in Reutlingen. He studied chemistry in Tübingen and was awarded his doctorate in organic chemistry in 1975.

In 1976 Dr. Hambrecht joined the BASF Polymers Laboratory, responsible for polystyrene, styrenic copolymers and polyphenylene ethers. In 1985 he became Head of Research and Purchasing at Lacke und Farben AG, Münster, Germany (now BASF Coatings AG). In 1990 he was appointed President of the Engineering Plastics division. In 1995 he became President of the East Asia division, based in Hong Kong. In 1997 Jürgen Hambrecht was appointed as member of the Board of Executive Directors. From 2003 until May 6, 2011 he was Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE.

Dr. Hambrecht is member of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Trumpf GmbH & Co. KG and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Fuchs Petrolub AG.
