Environmental Certificate for the C-Class Sedan and Station Wagon
Like the sedan, the new C-Class station wagon has now also received an Environmental Certificate. The German TÜV Süd Technical Inspectorate has thus certified that both vehicles were developed in full compliance with the ISO 14062 standard. Mercedes-Benz is the only automaker worldwide to receive this exacting certificate.
For 12 years now, “Design for Environment” — as defined in ISO Standard 14062 — has served as a guiding principle in Mercedes passenger car development. Experts in the fields of ecological balance, dismantling and recycling planning, materials and process technology, design, and production participate in the development of new models and define ecological specifications. The ecological balance sheet of the new station wagon, for instance, tracks about 40,000 individual processes and covers the entire life cycle of the vehicle, from the production of its materials and components to its road use for 200,000 kilometers and ultimate disposal.

Variables such as energy consumption and emissions were calculated on the basis of the C 200 KOMPRESSOR and the C 200 CDI. Both engine versions of the current station wagon achieved substantially better values than the precursor models introduced in 2001. For example, the total energy consumption for production, use, and recycling in the C 200 KOMPRESSOR station wagon has been reduced by 17.7 percent.
Nitrogen oxide emissions from the new C 200 KOMPRESSOR are 90 percent below the EU’s exhaust emission limits. The emissions of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide are about 86 percent and about 75 percent below their respective limits.
