Vehicles used in airport operations must fulfil a wide variety of tasks. Before an aircraft’s departure they must supply it with water, fuel and food, and after arrival they have to remove the corresponding liquids. In the winter, they have to be able to clear snow-covered runways within minutes, and de-ice aircraft. Finally, an aircraft that has just landed has to be led to its parking position and the crew has to be shuttled in a comfortable vehicle.
Mercedes-Benz provides solutions to all of these requirements with its commercial vehicles. They start with the compact smart as a “Follow me” car and progress to the Vito van serving as a crewbus, the Sprinter as the basis for a cherry picker, the new Atego as a catering or sweeper vehicle and through to the heavy-duty Actros as a tractor for a sweeper/blower unit. In addition, Mercedes-Benz off-road vehicles and buses are also in use at many of the world’s airport.
Of course all of these vehicles are up to the latest standards of technology. The Actros Blue-Tec 5, for instance, already meets the Euro 5 requirements that will not be mandatory until 2009, and in the light segment the new Atego boasts an updated, even more ergonomic cab and extended service intervals.
Mercedes-Benz also provides a number of options in terms of alternative drive systems: the Sprinter and Econic are available with natural-gas-fuelled engines.
Airport ground service vehicles on the Daimler stand
At the Inter Airport Europe 2007 trade fair, Daimler AG will, from its extensive range of Mercedes-Benz airport ground service vehicles, be displaying a sampling of four vehicles on its 300 m2 J 82 outdoor stand. They are the smart “Follow me” car for airport operations, a Sprinter 209 CDI crewcab with Renninger low platform, an Atego 1318 with Schrader drinking water body and a Unimog U 500 with a MULAG MGM 650 high-capacity mulcher.
In addition, Mercedes-Benz supplies chassis and complete vehicles from its Vito, Sprinter and Vario van series, the Atego, Actros, Axor and Econic truck series, the
G model, M-Class, C-Class and E-Class passenger car series as well as various coach series and the versatile Unimog implement carrier to airport operations worldwide.
Numerous body builders and suppliers of ground service vehicles use Mercedes-Benz chassis as the base for airport emergency response vehicles, fire-fighting vehicles, security vehicles, passenger stair vehicles, catering vehicles, aircraft tankers, passenger and crew shuttles, fresh water supply and toilet waste disposal vehicles, aircraft and airfield de-icing vehicles, service and repair vehicles, aircraft wash vehicles, apron tractors, winter service equipment, apron sweepers, mowing vehicles and sweeper/blower equipment.
