Stuttgart – With a large number of spectacular new developments the Mercedes‑Benz Bus and Coach unit underscores its technological leadership at this year's Busworld in Kortrijk, Belgium, from 21 to 26 October. The biggest bus and coach show in Europe provides the platform for the world premiere of the Mercedes‑Benz Travego Edition 1. The first touring coach to comply with the Euro 6 emission standard enters the competition with a new BlueEfficiency Power engine, new transmission and cockpit and unrivalled safety features. The new Mercedes‑Benz Citaro, the new standard for regular-service buses and successor to the world's best-selling urban regular-service bus, has its show premiere in Kortrijk. With the special model Tourismo "125! years of innovation" the Mercedes‑Benz Bus and Coach unit celebrates the birthday of the automobile. The three-axle low-floor bus Sprinter 77 emphasises how big a minibus can be. Last, but not least, the Integro M as bus for regular rural service and excursion use demonstrates high flexibility and thus economy.
Travego Edition 1: the first touring coach to meet the Euro 6 emission standard
"The love for invention never ceases." This motto of Carl Benz, inventor of the automobile and the bus, adorns the side of the Mercedes‑Benz Travego Edition 1, which marks the beginning of a new touring coach era. In this case love for invention means: the Travego Edition 1 is the first coach to meet the future Euro 6 emission standard, which becomes binding at the beginning of 2014. The Travego Edition 1 has an engine from the new BlueEfficiency Power engine generation, a new transmission with new gearshift, a further upgraded, ideally ergonomic cockpit, and new safety features. With the Mercedes-Benz flagship, already today future-minded customers can take on a role as trailblazer in environmental friendliness.
High-torque Mercedes-Benz engine from the new BlueEfficiency Power engine generation
The engine of the Travego Edition 1 is a vertically installed in-line six-cylinder from the new OM 471 series. From a displacement of 12.8 l it develops 350 kW (476 hp) at 1800 rpm. The high maximum torque runs up to 2300 Nm at 1100 rpm. This data and the characteristics of the new power plant guarantee outstanding performance. The engine features the unique common-rail injection system X-Pulse with pressure booster. It results in extremely precise fuel injection with cylinder-selective control, high injection pressures of as much as 2100 bar and freely modulated injection – prerequisites for low fuel consumption, low exhaust emissions and smooth engine operation. In the Travego Edition 1 the engine of tomorrow already is available today.
Additional advantages result from the efficacious three-stage exhaust brake and the asymmetric turbocharger. Despite exhaust gas recirculation it ensures rapid response to accelerator movements for the benefit of agile driving performance. The torque characteristics of the new engine permit unusually low, fuel-saving engine speeds. And so along with spontaneous acceleration the engine surprises with tremendous pulling power: the engine almost attains its full torque of 2300 Nm already at 1000 rpm. At barely 900 rpm the engine produces 2000 Nm of torque.
Conflict between emissions and fuel consumption resolved
The particularly stringent requirements of the future Euro 6 standard for nitrogen oxide emissions (NOX) generally stand in contradiction to the demands for further reduced particulate emissions and low fuel consumption. Mercedes‑Benz resolves this conflict of goals with the unique new X-Pulse injection technique and a complex emission control system. For this purpose, the BlueTec engine technology featuring SCR equipment and AdBlue injection, proven in more than 100,000 units, is combined with exhaust gas recirculation and a particulate filter.
The new in-line engines impress with low consumption and particularly low pollutant emissions. Owing to the cooled exhaust gas recirculation, fewer nitrogen oxides are produced during fuel combustion, which has enabled reducing AdBlue consumption by 40 percent compared with Euro 5. The AdBlue now is injected into the exhaust flow without air by the optimised metering unit; in the SCR catalytic converter the nitrogen oxides are almost completely converted into water and nitrogen. The exhaust system of the Euro 6 engines additionally is fitted with a highly effective diesel particulate filter which in the Travego has to be serviced the first time after 360,000 km and then only ever 240,000 km.
To avoid increased backpressure in the exhaust system with a corresponding negative impact on fuel consumption, the entire exhaust gas aftertreatment system including oxidation catalytic converter, particulate filter and SCR catalytic converter is a two-pipe design. All components are contained in one housing.
Travego Edition 1: lower emissions, low fuel consumption
At the bottom line, Euro 6 in the Travego Edition 1 means a further sharp reduction in exhaust emissions without the initially feared increase in fuel consumption. Simultaneously, the consumption of AdBlue declines by about 40 percent.
To attain these goals, the developers of the Travego Edition 1 had to pull all the stops. For instance, a distinctly higher cooling performance is required for Euro 6. It was achieved based on extensive analyses and tests: relocation of the radiator from the left side to the right, partitioning of the radiator compartment from the engine compartment, additional openings for outgoing air in the vehicle rear end, use of optimised fans and of fan clutches featuring improved control. All in all the efficiency of the cooling system was increased by 30 percent. Moreover, noises and engine compartment temperatures could be further reduced.
Euro 6 components have no effect on passenger and luggage capacity
Understandably, the additional components for Euro 6 gave rise to further challenges in regard to vehicle weight and weight distribution. The positioning of the Euro 6 components tends to make the vehicles "tail-heavy". For optimum weight distribution the developers therefore relocated the fuel tank to a position forward of the front axle, in a swap with the batteries, and at the same time vehicle weight was cut further by optimising production components (e.g. windows and air conditioner). In this way an important target was achieved: Euro 6 buses should not restrict passenger and luggage capacity compared with the previous Euro 5 models.
New drive train tested for endurance
Extensive tests verified the reliability of the new drive train. Within one year five continuously operating vehicles together covered more than 1.5 million kilometres. With 20 hours of service on seven days a week, each ran up as much as 300,000 km within a year. The tests were performed mainly in Turkey under extreme climatic conditions. For instance, in the southern parts of Turkey as many as 192 summer days with temperatures exceeding 25 degrees Celsius are recorded in a year. The temperatures peak at over 45 degrees Celsius. The eastern regions of the country present a contrast: winter prevails there for six months and brings below-freezing temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius.
Generally speaking, the customers of a Travego Edition 1 profit from numerous advantages: the BlueEfficiency Power engines of the new generation are even more durable and robust than their predecessors. Ninety percent of the engines attain a mileage of 1.2 million km without overhaul (previous model: 1.0 million km). The maintenance intervals of the new engines also have been increased to up to 120,000 km (previous model: up to 90,000 km). Fuel consumption is favourable, AdBlue consumption sinks sharply. With its low exhaust emissions the touring coach is a safe bet for the future. The low driving noise means further improved comfort for the passengers.
New GO 250-8 PowerShift transmission
Together with the Euro 6 engines Mercedes‑Benz introduces the new GO 250-8 PowerShift eight-speed bus transmission in the Travego Edition 1. The fully automated unit is based on the very well liked GO 240-8 PowerShift transmission, which continues to be used unchanged in the other models. As usual, drivers profit from the progressive gear spacing and quick and comfortable gearshifts. The ratios likewise range from 6.57 in 1st gear to 0.63 in the highest gear. The name of the transmission makes it clear: it is approved for maximum engine torques of up to 2500 Nm. A heat exchanger now keeps the oil in the transmission at a constant operating temperature of about 80 degrees. This has a positive effect on the oil change intervals of the transmission.
Crawler mode and a new retarder
New is a transmission crawler mode similar to that of automatic transmissions with torque converter. It enables sensitive manoeuvring simply by operating the brake pedal.
The new, integrated retarder develops braking torque of as much as 3500 Nm. It is designed as a secondary retarder and uses the engine coolant as braking and cooling medium. The previously necessary oil/water heat exchanger can be omitted along with the retarder oil change this entailed. This measure cuts the dry weight of the new GO 250-8 versus the previous transmission by 20 kg to 285 kg, despite the higher performance.
New is also the mostly wear- and maintenance-free clutch. Owing to a centrally arranged pneumatically actuated clutch cylinder, mechanical parts like clutch release fork, release bearing and declutching force booster can be dropped.
Shifting now by means of steering-column lever
The gearshift of the GO 250-8 PowerShift transmission is completely new: a steering-column lever takes the place of the previously used dashboard-mounted joystick. It contains all functions, but its unmistakable operation makes it clear and logical at the same time. The lever enables changing between the driving modes D/N/R, and between automatic and manual shifting, if required. Manually, the driver can intervene by briefly pulling the lever towards himself or tapping it. As accustomed, the driver controls the retarder by moving the lever downwards.
Ideally ergonomic driver's workplace redesigned down to fine details
The steering-column lever used to operate the gearshift is one of the most conspicuous modifications to the driver's workplace. But the developers have realised many more new ideas besides to optimise the ergonomics for the driver: the new "stacks and cards" control concept, for example, was implemented in the display. The use of pictograms and structured menu prompting via the new multifunction steering wheel appreciably simplify navigating through the various functions and displays.
The new electronic key is inserted on the left-hand side of the dashboard. The ignition and the engine start/stop system are controlled by a two-stage pushbutton switch. The switches in the cockpit have been rearranged according to function. Their number could be noticeably reduced by assigning them multiple purposes. The space filled by the previous joystick shift lever now is occupied by an open tray in the Travego Edition 1.
Large, clearly arranged instruments
Another new feature of the display is the use of an anti-reflection pane made of genuine glass. Two large dial instruments indicate road speed and engine speed. Two smaller gauges indicate the fuel and AdBlue levels. By means of the steering wheel keys the driver can retrieve many further items of information in the centrally arranged colour display.
On the right-hand side, the driver operates the entertainment electronics as accustomed. In the console he finds the new Blaupunkt Professional Line 3 radio including hands-free facility and USB connection for MP3 formats.
New safety system Attention Assist warns of drowsiness
It's become a tradition: with the introduction of each new generation of the premium high-deck touring coach Mercedes‑Benz Travego, new safety systems also celebrate their premiere in a coach. This applies to the Travego Edition 1 too. Unique to the coach is the new Attention Assist, selectable as special equipment. It registers parameters like steering angle, speed, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, travelling time, control signals and driver changes. By correlating the data, Attention Assist draws inferences about the driver's condition. If the data indicate a lack of concentration and drowsiness, a coffee cup symbol appears on the display as a hint that it's necessary to take a break.
Additional special equipment items further improve the safety level. The new LED daytime running lamps are integrated in the headlamp housings. The tyre pressure monitoring system shows the current pressure in the individual tyres and warns of any divergence from the optimum pressure. This reduces tyre wear, has a positive influence on fuel consumption and prevents dangerous tyre damage.
The discreetly integrated daytime running lamps and the new vents in the engine flap of the Travego Edition 1, along with the change in position of the ventilation grille from left to right side, are the externally visible modifications to the new generation of the Travego Edition 1. Attentive observers also will notice that the tank flaps have been moved forward of the front axle.

The introduction of the new Travego Edition 1 begins with the three-axle Travego L and Travego M with lengths of 14 and 13 metres, respectively. They will be delivered from the start of the coming year.
New Mercedes-Benz Citaro: benchmark for regular-service buses
The footsteps of the world's best-seller, Mercedes‑Benz Citaro, are big, and no one can follow in them better than the new Citaro. It again sets the standard for regular-service buses, visibly embodied by the all new design from headlamps to tail lights. The "face" of the new Citaro radiates sympathy and friendliness with large headlamps and an arched windscreen. The side windows, extending 120 mm farther down than before, stand for transparency, while distinctive wheel arches express dynamism. The rear end of the new Citaro likewise profits from curves and radiates a congenial modernity. The regular-service bus thus presents itself as an ambassador for attractive public passenger transport.
Highest economy down to the smallest detail
The friendly look of the new Citaro is at the same time absolutely functional. For example, the large headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lamps improve the light output and thus safety. The segments of the side panels reach around the bottom edge of the vehicle and protect the hem section. The bumper is a three-piece design for the sake of ease of repair. New are the shoe-shaped scuffing protectors, one each on the right and left sides, which protect the floor assembly should the Citaro make contact with the ground. The three-dimensionally shaped wheel arches made of glass-fibre reinforced plastic are flexible and therefore prevent damage from light contact. The rear corner sections of the new Citaro also are flexible.
From its predecessor the new Citaro gets the environment-friendly engines with BlueTec diesel technology, known for their economy. As an alternative to the standard Euro 5 version, the new Citaro also is available in EEV version, even without a particular filter. The engine range comprises the compact six-cylinder turbodiesel OM 906 hLA with 6.37 l displacement, 210 kW (286 hp) output and 1120 Nm torque as well as the OM 457 hLA with 12 l displacement and 220 kW (299 hp) and 260 kW (354 hp) and, respectively, torque of 1250 Nm and 1600 Nm.
LED lamps for interior and exterior save electricity and normally last the entire life of the bus. Longer maintenance intervals for the automatic transmission and rear axle and for the filter of the driver's workplace ventilation unit cut costs. The same can be said of the initial cost and maintenance of an additional air conditioner option, the compact air conditioner. It is mounted as an autonomous individual system over the roof hatches. The new electrical system in circuit board design can be easily fitted with adapters. On the income side, additional advertising is made possible by new marketing ideas in the interior such as innovative grab rails with advertising inserts.
Friendly passenger compartment design
The new Citaro appears even more cheerful owing to its passenger compartment design, the flatter cross duct and its new grab rail concept. Lighter colours and a quiet ceiling design make the interior look even airier and more inviting. The new lighting concept includes full illumination of entrances and exits, indirect illumination of the flaps on the roof edge by multidimensional lenses in the ceiling lamps, and optional reading lamps in the passenger compartment. They curb the risk of vandalism at the same time. As alternative to fluorescent lamps, LED lamps find use. New too are the optional lamps in the grab rails.
Milestone of safety technology
The safety concept of the new Citaro sets standards and includes several premieres: for the first time the Electronic Stability Program ESP is available for a low-floor vehicle and an urban bus. As special equipment, a cornering light function and xenon headlamps improve visibility. The integrated LED daytime running lamps are standard equipment. The raised driver's workplace brings a further improvement in all-round visibility. Unique for urban buses is the frontal impact protection based on the ECE R 29 standard. Together with the now even stiffer yet lighter framework it improves passive safety. Already now, the new Citaro thus meets the requirements of regulation ECE R 66/01 governing the survival space in a roll-over, which is being made stiffer starting in 2017. The new inward folding doors from our own production are lighter and increase strength and stability. A new feature is the pivot-and-slide door at the front entrance.
Cockpit comfortable and ideal for operation
The driver takes a seat in the new Citaro in a completely redesigned cockpit. The door is now hinged at the rear and opens at the front. The instrument panel meets the specifications of the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), but is airier, offers more knee room, is appreciably more informative owing to a colour display, and ergonomically optimised. Keys on the new steering wheel enhance operating comfort as do additional DIN drawers, more space in the extended front end, and the 60 mm higher workplace. New anti-aggression cabs available ex factory protect the driver. In the basic version the raised position of the driver, at eye level with the passengers, already conveys a better feeling of security. The illumination of the driver's cab, ventilation controls and stowage facilities also have been optimised.
An extended front overhang (plus 100 mm) and longer wheelbase (plus 55 mm) cause the Citaro to grow in length as solo bus compared with the previous model from 11,950 mm to now 12,105 mm. Owing to the modular design, the new Citaro G articulated bus adopts these larger dimensions. For the sake of the still unmatched manoeuvrability, however, both the typical A-zero pillars and the side corner sections retain an identical distance from the front axle. So in practice the front section does not swing out any further during cornering and manoeuvring.
Start with the volume models, range complete at the end of 2012
In the course of 2011 Mercedes‑Benz will introduce the volume models of the new Citaro step by step, focussing on urban and rural-service variants with a length of 12 m and 2 or 3 doors, and on the Citaro as articulated bus. The other model variants follow in 2012. The new Mercedes‑Benz Citaro is a safe bet for the future: all installation spaces already are prepared to accomodate the components for the future Euro 6 emission standard.
The exhibition vehicle is a 12.1 m long solo bus with two inward folding doors. The engine output of the Mercedes‑Benz OM 457 hLA in-line six-cylinder engine is 220 kW (299 hp); power trnsmission is handled by the six-speed ZF Ecolife automatic transmission with torque converter. The bus meets the EEV emission standard, achieving this without a particulate filter. The passenger compartment is air-conditioned by an EvoCool roof-mounted unit; there is a separate air conditioner for the driver. CityStar Eco seats are fitted. Whereas the ceiling grab rail is done in "Evo Steel", the vertical rails are painted pearl gold metallic. The floor covering has a wood look. The body of the Citaro, including the exterior mirror covers and roof attachments, are painted maya gold metallic.
Tourismo "125! years of innovation" special model
The year 2011 marks the anniversary of the automobile for Mercedes‑Benz. The Mercedes‑Benz Bus and Coach unit is properly celebrating the invention of the automobile by Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler with an attractive Edition model of the Tourismo high-deck touring coach, "125! years of innovation". No model is better suited for this purpose than the best-seller among the touring coaches of Europe: introduced in 2006, to date almost 5000 units of the high-deck touring coach have been sold in the business segment. This success is based on a clear positioning as an especially economical and safe touring coach available in numerous variants.
The dynamic Edition badge adorns the Tourismo's radiator grille. Over the front wheel arches, under the lettering, the evolution of the Mercedes star from its beginnings through today can be seen. The five different stars symbolise the great brand and automotive history in a discreet and self-confident way. The Edition badge also can be seen by people entering the front section of the Tourismo.
The equipment of the Edition model includes a metal strip in the entrances with a punched out brand logo backlit in blue, and step lights in orange LED. The passenger seats are available in each case in one version with Basic, Softline or Luxline upholstery in tasteful, up-to-date fabric combinations. For the head sections of the seats, in each case two leather colours are available. The popular floor covering Harmonia Ship Tropical with cosy wood look harmoniously complements the warm interior colours. The special Tourismo model is available as high-decker in all three length variants as Tourismo, Tourismo M and Tourismo L.

The exhibition vehicle is a two-axle high-decker with a length of 12.1 metres. The paintwork is done in night gold metallic, including roof attachments and exterior mirror covers. The cosy passenger compartment features a Harmonia Ship Tropical floor covering along with side panels in anthracite and "Tobacco"-pattern fabric on the undersides of the luggage racks. The seats (49 passenger seats) are three-star seats as defined by Gütegemeinschaft Buskomfort, the German bus comfort certifying society.
The TravelStar Xtra seats have two-point seat belts, folding tables, footrests, luggage nets. The aisle seats are laterally adjustable. The seats are covered with "Medusa" fabric, the backrests with "Tobacco". The leather head sections have a "Pebble" pattern, as do the fabric piping and the curtains on the side windows. A DVD player with two 19-inch screens provides for entertainment. A freezer, a compact galley at the central entrance and on-board toilet provide for bodily needs. The Mercedes‑Benz OM 457 hLA in-line six-cylinder engine has an output of 300 kW (408 hp); the fully automated eight-speed manual transmission Mercedes Powershift GO 240-8 handles power transmission.
Sprinter City 77: start of delivery of new flagship minibus
It's the current flagship of the Mercedes-Benz minibus range: the Sprinter City 77. At the last International Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover its three-axle, 8.7-metre-long vehicle concept drew strong attention, as did the vehicle design.
The low-floor chassis with tandem rear axle, like the body of the Sprinter City 77, is an exclusive in-house development of the Mercedes-Benz Minibus unit. With room for up to 40 passengers it closes the gap between the Sprinter City 65 and the 10.5 metre-long Citaro K. Compared with the previous top model in this vehicle series, the Sprinter City 65, the Sprinter City 77 offers about one metre of added vehicle length entirely for the benefit of passenger compartment and ten additional passenger seats. The basis of this high transport potential is a permissible gross vehicle weight of 6.8 tons.
Two double-wing outward swinging doors and a kneeling function plus the low floor, which is flat throughout, afford best conditions for convenient entry and alighting and rapid passenger flow. Depending on configuration, a wheelchair bay is available at the front and at the back. It features barrier-free accessibility alternatively via folding ramp or electrically operated telescoping ramp. The spacious, light-bathed interior with large windows and generously glazed doors definitely shows this to be a Mercedes‑Benz bus also where colours, appointments and designs are concerned.
The chassis of the Sprinter City 77 features independent wheel suspension on all wheels and single tyres of size 235/65 R 16. The wheelbase between the first and second axle is compact 4100 mm. The rear axles are air-sprung as standard; the front axle features the glass-fibre reinforced plastic leaf springs of the Sprinter. Owing to the relatively short wheelbase and the slim design, even the biggest Mercedes‑Benz minibus is predestined for use in cramped city centres. It suggests itself for use moreover as shuttle bus at airports and trade fairs and for rural passenger transport.
The technical platform of the Sprinter City 77 is the Sprinter chassis fitted with the most powerful version of the four-cylinder diesel engine. Its output of 120 kW (163 hp) and the maximum torque of 360 Nm enable adequate performance. With Euro 5 compliance and, as option, EEV, the Sprinter City 77 ranks among the clean urban vehicles. Engine power is transferred by a five-speed fully automatic torque converter transmission as standard.

The exhibition vehicle including roof attachments and bumpers is painted glacier blue metallic. Light-alloy wheels serve good looks and to improve the weight balance in the Sprinter City 77. Folding ramps at both double-width outward folding doors and the kneeling function facilitate the entry and exit of passengers with mobility handicaps. A wheelchair bay has been furnished opposite each door. The standing space for 30 passengers is supplemented by ten fixed seats of the CityStar Eco type and two folding seats in each of the entrance zones at the front and rear. The chosen seat cover design is called "MB 7693 Check"; the colour of the grab rails is signal yellow.
Integro: economical all-rounder for every day
Rural regular service, excursions, short trips – the Mercedes‑Benz Integro is not one to shirk any work. The extremely economical all-rounder is a bus for 365 days a year. Accordingly, it offers a very varied range of raised-floor vehicles from 12.1 to 14.9 metres in length. In-line six-cylinders from the Mercedes‑Benz OM 457 hLA series with outputs from 220 kW (299 hp) to 300 kW (408 hp) find use as engines. In keeping with the particular application, customers can choose between a six-speed manual transmission, a fully automated manual transmission or an automatic transmission with torque converter. Since mid 2011 the Mercedes-Benz Integro is available with the new TravelStar Eco rural-service seats from our own production. On the occasion of the 2010 Hanover Commercial Vehicle Show, the new TravelStar Xtra touring coach seats were presented for the first time in the Mercedes-Benz Travego.
Components which have proved themselves in thousands of vehicles, great ease of maintenance, and the unsurpassed corrosion protection provided by cataphoretic immersion priming ensure the value retention and economy of the Integro. With its fully adequate safety equipment the Integro's safety standard is unmatched in its class. The suspension, both comfortable and safe, is based on touring coach components.

The Integro M exhibition vehicle underscores the versatility of this model series. The 13-metre-long two-axle bus including mounted parts is elegantly painted in meteor gold metallic. The bus not only seats 55 passengers, but also an interchangeable platform for prams opposite the double-wing central door. The floor in this area has airline-style rails and retainer straps to fix wheelchairs in place. Passengers with mobility handicaps comfortably get on board the Integro by means of a lift at the central entrance.
The seats are TravelStar Eco seats with adjustable backrest and footrest and folding armrest on the aisle side. All passenger seats are fitted with three-point seat belts. The upholstery fabric "La Plata" for seat cushions and backrests is combined with leather head sections in the colour curry and upholstery piping in curry. The backs of the backrests are covered in anthracite as are the undersides of the luggage racks and the side wall trim. A roof-mounted air conditioner together with hot-water convector heating provides for the right temperature in the passenger compartment, fully automatically. Ventilation nozzles, reading lamps, curtains and the courier's seat emphasise comfort, while the ceiling grab rail with stop request buttons and the destination display emphasise the unlimited suitability as a rural-service bus. The engine output of 220 kW (299 hp) from the in-line six-cylinder Mercedes‑Benz OM 457 hLA goes together well with this application. Without particulate filter, the engine qualifies the vehicle as EEV.
