Stuttgart/Nürburgring. The Italian driver Roberto Magrini, representing the Cardinali bus company, won the 9th Setra Grand Prix, held from 12–14 April 2011 on the Nürburgring racetrack. This year’s event also marked the 60th anniversary of the Ulm-based Daimler brand. Johannes Backes of Nikolaus Backes GmbH in Weiskirchen was runner-up, while third place went to Jan-Erik Block, from the Husum-based Alfred Block Omnibusbetrieb, who also won the award for the most promising young driver. The women’s event was won by Arlette Zügel, driving for Omnibusverkehr Zügel GmbH, from the Swabian town of Wüstenrot. She was placed 48th in the overall standings. This year’s event included an overall nations’ competition for the first time, won by Denmark, ahead of Italy and Austria.
The Daimler brand Setra had again invited 120 bus drivers from throughout Europe and the USA to put their expertise to the test. The event included a skills and safety trial on and around the racetrack in the Eifel region, and also tested the sensitivity and precision required for economical driving. At the prizegiving in the ringowerk museum in the new leisure park at the racetrack, Setra Omnibusse Sales Director Lothar Holder thanked all participants for their contribution to a hard-fought but sportsmanlike competition: “Over the last two days we in the Setra family have deliberately put the driver on centre stage. I am delighted that the Setra Grand Prix has become so well established as an information exchange forum for drivers from throughout Europe and the USA.”
Setra came up with some innovations in this anniversary year. These included the idea of starting the competition with a night-driving exercise, and the first “Journalists’ Cup”, requiring the trade journalists to complete the same tasks as the competitors, in a slightly abbreviated format.
At the end of the event the 300 organisers and participants all took to the racetrack to form a huge human “60”, to mark the Setra brand’s anniversary, while a fleet of 27 buses outlined the brand logo.
Setra brand awarded the “Best Bus” trophy
The prizegiving featured a very special award for the Daimler brand, when Sascha Böhnke, editor-in-chief of the Busfahrer magazine for bus drivers, presented the “Best Bus” trophy to Lothar Holder. The more than 1000 votes received from readers of the Munich trade magazine, all professional bus drivers, awarded this honour to the S 416 GT-HD, in the new Setra ComfortClass 400. The voting criteria included visual appearance, design, innovation, safety features, workmanship, driver’s workstation, handling, driving characteristics, passenger-friendliness and driver visibility from within the vehicle and with outside visibility aids.
