Stuttgart/Kortrijk - At the biggest bus and coach show of the year 2011, Busworld, in Kortrijk, Belgium, from 21 to 26 October, Daimler Buses present their current range of buses and coaches for touring and scheduled services, including numerous new products, on three exhibition stands in Hall 5 and on the open-air grounds. With the exhibition programme of the Mercedes-Benz and Setra brands, Daimler Buses once again document their great innovative power and scope as full-line supplier, from minibus to regular-service bus to touring coach. A carefree all-round service package is guaranteed by the joint service brand Omniplus with its highly specialised offers for the bus operator.
Premieres at the Mercedes-Benz stand
Europe's most important bus and coach show provides the platform for the world premiere of the Mercedes-Benz Travego Edition 1. The Mercedes-Benz Travego is the first touring coach to comply with the Euro 6 standard and presents itself with a new BlueEfficiency Power engine, new transmission and cockpit plus the safety system Attention Assist, unique in a bus. The engine of the Travego Edition 1 is a vertical in-line six-cylinder with 12.8 l displacement from the new OM 471 series which develops 350 kW (476 hp) at 1800 rpm. The engine features the unique common-rail injection system
X-Pulse with pressure booster. It results in extremely precise fuel injection with cylinder-selective control, high injection pressures of as much as 2100 bar and freely modulated injection – prerequisites for low fuel consumption, low exhaust emissions and smooth engine operation. Together with the Euro 6 engines Mercedes-Benz is introducing the new GO 250-8 PowerShift eight-speed bus transmission in the Travego Edition 1. The fully automated unit is based on the proven GO 240-8 PowerShift transmission, which continues to be used unchanged in the other models. As usual, drivers profit from the transmission's progressive gear spacing and quick and comfortable gearshifts.
No less spectacular is the new Citaro, which will be making its first appearance at a show at Busworld in Kortrijk. The new Citaro is the successor to the world's best-selling urban regular-service bus and sets the standard for regular-service buses, visibly embodied by the all new design from headlamps to tail lights. The "face" of the new Citaro radiates sympathy and friendliness with large headlamps and an arched windscreen. The safety concept sets standards and includes several premieres: for the first time the Electronic Stability Program ESP is available for a low-floor vehicle and an urban bus. As special equipment, a cornering light function and xenon headlamps improve visibility. The raised driver's workplace brings a further improvement in all-round visibility. Frontal impact protection based on the ECE R 29 standard, available in an urban bus for the first time, together with the now even stiffer yet lighter framework, improves passive safety. Already now, the new Citaro thus meets the requirements of regulation ECE R 66/01 governing the survival space in a roll-over, which is being made stiffer starting in 2017.
The year 2011 marks the anniversary of the automobile for Mercedes Benz. The Mercedes Benz Bus and Coach unit is properly celebrating the invention of the automobile by Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler with an attractive Edition model of the Tourismo high-deck touring coach, "125! years of innovation". No model is better suited for this purpose than the best-seller among the touring coaches of Europe. The Tourismo was introduced in 2006. To date almost 5000 units have been sold in the business segment. This success is based on a clear positioning as an especially economical and safe touring coach available in numerous variants. Since the beginning of this year the Tourismo is equipped with the new touring coach seats.
No less impressive, the Sprinter City 77 with a length of 8.7 m graces the exhibition stand. The current flagship of the Mercedes-Benz minibus range has space for as many as 40 passengers and closes the gap between the Sprinter City 65 and the 10.5 m long Citaro K. Compared with the previous top model in this vehicle series, the Sprinter City 65, the Sprinter City 77 offers about one metre of added vehicle length entirely for the benefit of passenger compartment and ten additional passenger seats. The basis of this high transport potential is a permissible gross vehicle weight of 6.8 tons.
For rural regular service, excursions and short trips Mercedes Benz offers the Integro. The extremely economical all-rounder is a bus for 365 days a year. Accordingly, it offers a very varied range of raised-floor vehicles from 12.1 to 14.9 metres in length. In-line six-cylinders from the Mercedes Benz OM 457 hLA series with outputs from 220 kW (299 hp) to 300 kW (408 hp) find use as engines. Since mid-2011 the Mercedes-Benz Integro is available with the new TravelStar Eco rural-service seats from our own production.
Setra shows Final Edition of the ComfortClass
With eight vehicles from all three model series, at its indoor stand and on the open-air grounds of Busworld (21 – 26 October 2011) in Kortrijk the Setra Bus and Coach unit – Setra is a Daimler brand – demonstrates remarkable approaches to the interior and exterior design of touring coaches and rural regular-service buses and offers innovative solutions to operators. The same can be said for the many safety packages which Setra makes up for its customers and their passengers and drivers.
Exclusive appointments in the ComfortClass Final Edition
In the "Final Edition" of an S 415 GT-HD, Setra presents exclusive equipment highlights to the trade visitors at Busworld. The Setra ComfortClass coach is fitted with dark-tinted "Galaxsee" side windows and sparkles with brushed stainless steel mouldings. At Setra, small details, too, always create big effects. Passengers can make themselves comfortable in 49 Voyage Plus seats with leather head sections. The printed leather centre portions of the backrests, seat cushions and head sections are matched to the coach's exterior design. Moreover, passengers in the Final Edition S 415 GT-HD on display can avail themselves of a hot drinks dispenser with change machine during their journey.
On the occasion of its 60th anniversary, at the beginning of the year the Setra brand presented the "Special Edition", a limited edition of vehicles with special equipment variants. They include the TopClass S 416 HDH with staggered seats shown in Kortrijk. A state-of-the-art infotainment system for satellite TV and radio reception is the centrepiece. The monitors integrated in the seatbacks of the passenger seats, behind the driver and entrance 1, and on the rear wall of the galley can also display images recorded by the driver's camera.
As representative of the MultiClass rural-regular service bus generation, Setra is exhibiting an S 415 NF at Busworld. The two-door, low-floor vehicle has 41 seats. The interior features a congenial and inviting design with fabrics of different colours. The vehicle complies with EU Directive 2001/85, Class 2. The S 415 NF scores high with low operating costs and high value retention. Environmental friendliness is also one of its strong points. With the OM 457 hLA in-line six-cylinder engine without particulate filter it meets the currently most stringent voluntary emission standard EEV.
The S 416 H also is a member of the Setra MultiClass. Fitted with outward-swinging doors, the vehicle is shown with a bluff front and a Braun wheelchair lift at entrance 2. The lift has an extended boarding ramp. Inside the bus, across from the rear entrance, is the wheelchair bay, which can double as a pram area. Owing to fold-up cushions, a cinema-style double chair and twin seats which can be swung forward, this area can be cleared for use quickly and practically. Travellers can help themselves to snacks from a dispenser with change machine in this area.
Four exhibits in open-air section
With an S 431 DT Setra also is showing a representative of the limited Special Edition on the open-air grounds of the show. The double-decker TopClass coach accommodates 78 passengers in Setra Voyage Plus seats. This seat version guarantees outstanding comfort with additional padding and a special cut. The seats with leather head sections are fitted in the vehicle in a staggered arrangement. In addition, passengers can relax at two club tables on the lower deck, where the galley with two 40-cup coffeemakers and two sausage heaters is located. The flagship of the TopClass features a proximity control with Active Brake Assist (ABA) and a Lane Assistant.
The S 411 HD in the open-air section also is fitted with the new Setra Voyage Plus seats. It accommodates 36 passengers. In this coach, fitted with a multifunctional aerial, passengers can follow the entertainment and information programme during the journey on two 48 cm (19 inch) screens.
In the open-air section Setra also presents an S 417 UL featuring a sloping front and pneumatically controlled outward swinging doors and suitably equipped for disabled users. The MultiClass vehicle features a Braun wheelchair lift at entrance 2 for carrying persons with reduced mobility. Opposite the rear entrance is also the tram area with interchangeable platform. The passenger stop request system in the bus has eight pushbuttons that give visual and acoustic signals.
The special feature of the S 416 GT-HD/2 of the ComfortClass, the fourth outdoor exhibit, is the configuration of entrance 2, located behind the rear axle. It enables the vehicle to offer more space for a spacious luggage compartment with a volume of 12.6 m3 and for a full-length passenger compartment. Owing to this special design the touring coach has been fitted at the rear, behind the seats, with a toilet and a spacious galley including large refrigerators. Galley and toilet elements are trimmed with airbrush motifs, and the carpet is turquoise. The S 416 GT-HD/2, suitable for touring use and rural service and fitted with a total of 42 Setra Voyage seats, combines attractive economy with highest travelling comfort.
Omniplus offers comprehensive one-stop service
With professional maintenance and repair services, efficient driver and service training, a large range of used vehicles and tailored financial services, Omniplus offers unique service covering all requirements of buses and coaches. With more than 600 authorised service stations in Europe, Omniplus offers the biggest service network dedicated to the bus. Tailored to needs and expense, Omniplus service stations are classified as Omniplus BusWorld or Omniplus BusPort stations according to the scope of the provided services.
Omniplus's 24h Service is available around the clock to drivers. Through the qualitative selection of service partners and standardised repair processes Omniplus ensures that in an emergency a bus is repaired promptly, on a high quality level and on fair terms. An example of its great efficiency is the Parts Logistics Center in Neu-Ulm. Here more than 100,000 genuine parts from complete engine to the smallest screw are warehoused.
Omniplus ServiceCard Basic and Premium: graduated service card concept
The Omniplus ServiceCard Premium is available to Mercedes-Benz and Setra bus customers free of charge. Those who can make do without parts of its extensive service package such as refuelling service or toll, tunnel and ferry service choose the cross-brand Omniplus ServiceCard Basic.
In the event of a breakdown, not only is speedy, expert assistance ensured. Thanks to binding international invoicing standards unpleasant surprises also are precluded. Moreover, the Omniplus ServiceCard Basic includes a customer-specific guaranteed payment facility.
The entire emergency roadside service system of Omniplus also responds as the situation requires: the driver reports in to the international control centre in his local language through the 24-hour service.
New mobility package for Mercedes-Benz and Setra buses and coaches
The mobility package BusMobility provides all-round protection in the event of a breakdown, because, apart from the passengers, time is the most valuable asset of any bus company. If the bus has a breakdown or an accident on the way, besides being a strain on the nerves it costs a lot of money. With Omniplus BusMobility the operator saves both in this unpleasant situation. In 40 European countries, around the clock the mobility services ensure short downtime thanks to a dense service network and minimise the customer's financial risk.
In addition to the services included in the Omniplus Service Card, the comprehensive mobility package Omniplus BusMobility now also is available. It provides greatly extended services and safeguards in the event of breakdowns, for example the assumption of the complete cost of mechanics including call-out charges, and spare parts worth up to 200 euros for roadside assistance – no matter whether a breakdown or an accident leads to the unintentional layover. In the event of a tyre defect too, BusMobility stands by the customer, paying the service charges and contributing 200 euros towards the cost of materials.
In international tourist travel, communication problems may arise or the driver may require legal assistance. The driver is optimally supported by BusMobility in cases like this too. Should the driver of a BusMobility-protected vehicle face penalties or should intercession in connection with a traffic offence be required, the organizational expense incurred for obtaining bail, examining the legality of penalties, translation assistance and mediation between police and judiciary are covered by the service.
