Rescue: Enabling Appropriate Action in Emergencies
In the event of an accident, technologies from Mercedes-Benz help to ensure that the right course of action is taken. Crash-responsive emergency lighting in passenger cars provide the necessary light in the occupant compartment to facilitate appropriate action by all those involved after a crash in the dark. An automatic E-call function shortens the wait before the emergency services arrive on the scene.
An automatic E-call shortens the time until rescuers arrive. And thorough training of rescue workers makes it possible, on the one hand, to tend optimally to the persons involved in the accident and, on the other hand, enables rescuers to work both efficiently and safely.
Automatic battery disconnect
Automatic disconnection of the battery causes the on-board electrical system to go dead within a few seconds. If the accident is of a minor nature, the high-voltage system is reversibly disconnected and can be reactivated after self-diagnosis. In serious accidents the high-voltage battery is separated from the on-board system by opening the battery contactors, and high-voltage components in the vehicle are quickly discharged. The on-board electrical system thus is isolated within the shortest possible time to avoid any risk of electric shock.
Crash-responsive emergency interior lighting
The crash-responsive emergency interior lighting is switched on automatically after an accident of defined severity in order to provide the occupants better orientation in the dark and to facilitate the work of the rescuers.
Automatic E-call
The transmission of a message is initiated by the triggering of the belt tensioners and/or airbags. If COMAND online is connected with a mobile phone, the GPS position and the vehicle chassis number are sent over the phone in a text message to the service and emergency call points. In addition, a voice connection with the rescue team immediately is established. This makes it easier for the helpers to get a first impression before they arrive at the scene of the accident.
Training of rescue personnel
Saving lives safely involves both training and protection for emergency service personnel. Live demonstrations and rescue guidelines, so called "Guidelines for Rescue Services", readily accessible on the Internet show the experts precisely how and where vehicles involved in an accident can be stabilized and sensitive components such as the fuel tank or battery can be made safe.

For the current passenger car series, the continuously updated documentation contains all data relevant to rescue, in a detailed and clear form. It permits rescue services to familiarize themselves in advance with the specific features of up-to-date vehicle models and work out rescue strategies best suited to the needs of the victims. Daimler rescue guidelines also are available for vans, trucks and buses. In practical training, on the latest models firefighters can learn about the diverse rescue facilities and use them. In addition to practical training,
