As a team you win together and lose together. We all hold our breath when you start the engine for the first time and applaud the first successes.
"Being part of the FSG in Hockenheim was an outstanding experience and I was particularly impressed by the immense professionalism of the participating teams." (Markus Enzweiler – Technical Manager Environment Perception, Mercedes-Benz AG)
Formula Student - the largest design competition for students worldwide: Within one year, participating teams design and construct a single-seated prototype in an international construction competition.
From the idea, through various test phases, to the drivable racing car, the students work on a wide variety of tasks and thus gain valuable practical experience. The basis for this is the Formula Student regulations, with very detailed specifications for the technical and business implementation.
The competition at the Hockenheimring in late summer is the highlight of Formula Student Germany - this is where it becomes clear which vehicles perform best in the various disciplines.
The teams can compete against each other in three different competitions:
- Combustion - Since the beginning of Formula Student, students have been developing a vehicle powered by a combustion engine.
- Electric - For more than 10 years, students have been developing a vehicle that is driven purely electrically.
- Driverless - Since 2017, the students have been developing a vehicle that starts without a driver.
- Mobility of the future - Daimler sponsors teams in all competition categories and thus promotes the future of autonomous and electric driving. These categories will continue to become increasingly important in the future.
Daimler offers a very special kind of support, which includes not only financial aspects but also a mentoring concept. We enable the teams to receive intensive support with around 20 mentors throughout the season.
At the beginning of the season, the "Boxenstopp@Daimler" takes place. There the students gain insights into various topics, such as project planning, risk analysis or agile working. Workshops teach skills for better team organization and leadership.
In the middle of the year, Daimler organizes the "Racetrack@Daimler". On Daimler’s own test track, teams can gain important test kilometres and additional racing experience under real conditions.
In addition, the mentors also analyse and evaluate the business management aspects - the focus here is on cost calculation and the business plan, among other things.
The highlight of each team is the big event at the Hockenheimring. There the individual competitions are decided and the best placements are awarded. Here, too, the mentors, who also act as jurors for the disciplines, provide our teams with advice and support and cheer on the teams.
"In my opinion, Formula Student is the best preparation for professional life that can happen to you. Nowhere else can you acquire professional know-how so intensively during your studies, develop your soft skills, experience and live team spirit and build up a cross-functional network. (Alexander Kuhn - Manager Team Digitalisation & Innovations, Mercedes-Benz AG)
