The location in Untertürkheim houses the development, production, and shipment of engines, transmissions and axles as well as the Daimler Group headquarters. The Mercedes-Benz plant in Untertürkheim has a more than 110-year history and is the lead plant within the global powertrain production network. The plant is a high-tech facility for the production of highly efficient engines and alternative drive systems, and is also responsible for the assembly of fuel-cell systems. Moreover, the Untertürkheim plant produces special transmissions for hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The facility consists of a total of six sub-plants. Whereas the facilities in Untertürkheim and Bad Cannstatt manufacture engines and house the forge, the transmissions are produced in Hedelfingen. The axle production facility and foundry are located in Mettingen. The training center is in Brühl, while the flexible manufacturing unit is in Esslingen. Untertürkheim is also home to the research and development unit and a high-bank curve for testing vehicles.
