Elke Tönjes-Werner was born in Ganderkesee (Germany) in 1963. After graduating from secondary school, she completed an apprenticeship as an upholsterer in 1979. In 1984, she moved to the sewing room/upholstery facility at the Bremen plant of Daimler AG, where she was elected to the Works Council in 1990. She is a member of the Operations Committee, spokesperson of the Personnel Committee and Deputy Chairwoman of the Works Council since 2014.
Since 1997, she has been a member of various negotiation groups in the General Works Council. She holds a REFA basic certificate and an MTM Practitioner's Certificate. From 2003 to 2005, she completed a training program as process manager, received her level A Business Competence License and took part in an advanced training series for members of the Supervisory Board offered by the University of Hamburg.
In addition to exercising various trade union functions, she has been active as an honorary judge at the Regional Labor Court in Bremen since 1999.
