The dawn of a new era First race of the 2017 Formula 1 Season

Perspectives

Formula 1 finally returns with the Grand Prix of Australia in Melbourne. New rules with wider, heavier and – a novelty – faster cars means that practically every racing team starts from scratch. There have been drastic changes also at Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, and not only to the car. New on board: Valtteri Bottas. The Finn completed 628 laps at the wheel of the new F1 W08 EQ Power + in the tests in Barcelona alone. Teammate Lewis Hamilton put in a total of 468 laps. All in all, the two Silver Arrow pilots clocked up a grand total of over 5,100 kilometers or 16 full race distances – more than any other team. Motorsport Director Toto Wolff is cautious with predictions: “What we’ve seen from Barcelona is that the margins at the front of the field have shrunk. We’ll see how that pans out in Melbourne, because we still don’t know about the fuel loads, weights or power settings of the other cars. As the old saying goes, it is when the flag drops that the bullshit really stops.”
