Playing a pioneering role in the promotion of digital trends motivates us to take part in traditional auto shows such as the IAA and present ourselves on new platforms and events that are related to other industries such as the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona as well as to establish our own Global Hackathon Series. Besides scouting the latest trends and technologies we actively seek the discussion with new audiences, which might traditionally not be drawn to an automotive company. You can find a description of former activities of DigitalLife@Daimler below.
Hack.IAA @ me Convention 2017
65 Students. 9 Nations. 13 Teams. 1 Goal. Shaping Future Mobility.
On September 15th and 16th 2017, the global Hackathon Series „DigitalLife Campus“ continued its journey with the Hack.IAA @ me Convention. The aim was to generate ideas regarding future mobility and to build first prototypes within only 24 hours on the world’s largest motor show, the IAA. All ideas were subsequently presented in front of an expert jury.
13 teams with a total of 65 international students competed against each other and developed their ideas around the focus topics “Artificial Intelligence & Car-2-X Technology”. The goal was to create apps, add-on services or digital service platforms for the connected car. During the challenge the students were supported by mentors coming from different areas and divisions of our company.
Innovation requires hard work
Although 24 hours are very short, it is always fascinating to see, how students are able to draft convincing concepts and prototypes for their digital service. Their hard work demonstrated passion and motivation to shape the future of mobility. The participants of the Hackathon and the DigitalLife team succeeded together in spreading the spirit of digital innovation throughout Daimler with a strong will and an extraordinary atmosphere.
“Intuitive mobility will determine our future. To this end it is particularly relevant to enter into an exchange with young digital talents. I am delighted with the spirit, wealth of ideas and confidence of the students who presented their concepts right there at the IAA show. It is important that we also let our visitors to the show participate in the digital and cultural transformation at Daimler.”
(Wilko Stark, Head of Daimler und Mercedes-Benz Cars Strategy)
As a result, this year’s ideas were equally diverse and innovative, so that the jury faced the challenge of awarding the top three ideas. In the end, the winner team “HD Vision deep” was able to convince the jury with their prototype. It detects the urban environment, analyzes the data using Artificial Intelligence and enables connected services such as flexible pick-up points for public transport or maps showing available parking spaces. You can get some impressions of the winner team by reading their blog.
There are more hackathons planned as part of the “DigitalLife Campus”.

New formats for digital transformation at Daimler
Together with Mercedes-Benz, DigitalLife@Daimler is driving digital transformation forward at the Mobile World Congress. Besides the pure hardware, such as the new E-Class Coupé and the smart fortwo electric drive, the exchange with industry experts at conferences and panel discussions are at the center of Mobile World Congress. Thus, one of the real highlights were the daily Inspiration Talks at the booth with experts from various Daimler AG business units about topics such as digital services, trends and the culture of innovation. Moreover, Mobile World Congress provided a great platform to showcase the cross-divisional digital ecosystem. The Mobile World Congress took place for 4 days. There were 108 000 visitors and experts from 208 countries and 2 300 companies.
With DigitalLife Campus we are bringing the most creative and passionate coders from all over the world together to team up and work around the clock to build groundbreaking prototypes and software solutions in one weekend. In 2016 we already successfully concluded our first cycle of hackathons with more than 300 participants and five great events on three continents. With some of the ideas and participants follow-up processes have been initiated either in terms of continuing to develop the ideas generated as well as to provide various employment opportunities. Being awarded with the Digital Leader Award 2017 for “DigitalLife Campus” as well as getting amazing feedback from the participants underlines the huge success of the series so far.
These are impressive milestones, highlighting that hackathons are an innovative platform making it possible to engage with students and young professionals from many different disciplines, who have come up with inspiring and unconventional ideas and thus help shape future mobility and digital transformation at Daimler.
The journey continues: Hack.IAA @ me Convention was the first of several hackathons to follow in 2017/2018. Additional international “DigitalLife Campus” hackathons are to be held in Europe as well as Overseas. For more info check out:
