Walter Hitzinger’s career began at Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG in Austria in 1935.
After a stint at the aero-engine factory Flugmotorenwerke Ostmark,he became Chief Executive and Chairman of the Board of Management of the Austrian truck manufacturer Saurer-Werke AG in Vienna in 1945. After the Second World War, he initially set up a factory for electrical machinery and in 1952 moved on to Vereinigte Österreichische Eisen- und Stahlwerke AG (VÖEST), Linz. From 1961 to 1966, Hitzinger was Chief Executive and Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler-Benz AG. He left the company in February 1966.
