Daimler Trucks celebrates the global launch of the FUSO eCanter - in the mega city of New York. At the end of July production of the first all-electric Canter began as a limited-volume series in the plants in Kawasaki and Tramagal. On the 14th of September 2017 we supplied a fleet of eight local zero-emission FUSO eCanter trucks to well-known New York based not-for-profits: Wildlife Conservation Society, New York Botanical Garden, Habitat for Humanity New York City, and Big Reuse Brooklyn.
FUSO eCanter - the first all-electric truck in series production
From now on the eCanters will be driving through the American metropolis both noise- and emission-free. The next big customer is already on deck: The logistics company UPS would like to make its fleet more environmentally friendly with the eCanter. And this is just the beginning, because yet this year more electric vehicles will be delivered to customers in the U.S., Europe and Japan. Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC), part of Daimler Trucks is planning to deliver 500 units of this generation to customers within the next two years. Large scale production is intended to start in 2019.
In times, when everybody is talking about electric trucks, we are the first to actually commercialize a series produced all-electric vehicle. Having a long history in alternative drivetrains, we are proud to now step into this new era.
The all-electric light-duty truck is MFTBC´s answer to the public´s need for a zero-emission, zero-noise truck for continuously increasing inner-city distribution. In addition to being an eco-friendly vehicle, it is cost-efficient and economical for users, as already proved within customers tests in Europe. The FUSO eCanter has a range of 100 kilometers and a load capacity up to three and a half tons - depending on body and usage. The vehicle´s electric powertrain contains six high voltage lithium ion battery packs with 420 V and 13.8 kWh each. In comparison with a conventional diesel truck, it offers savings up to 1,000 Euro per 10,000 kilometers on operating costs.
Cooperation with StoreDot to advance electric charging
Marketing the eCanter and establishing electric trucks, FUSO will also benefit from the Daimler knowledge pool of partner companies, like Mercedes-Benz Energy - a provider of local power storage or ChargePoint - a provider of charging station networks. To improve the development in charging battery technology, Daimler is investing in the Israeli company StoreDot, the innovation leader for electric charging. StoreDot´s FlashBattery technology enables charging any electric vehicle within minutes, as quickly as filling a tank of gas. Furthermore, FlashBattery´s high efficiency in recuperation is particularly interesting for commercial vehicles; better usage of braking energy increases the range and requires less frequent charging. This results, together with faster charging times, in higher vehicle usage.
