Together empowered: An electric future for buses and trucks

As today’s technological leader, Daimler Trucks & Buses intends to shape the logistics and passenger transport of tomorrow — with electric solutions that deliver the maximum benefit for customers and the environment.

To accomplish this, Daimler Trucks & Buses is placing the focus on those segments of the market in which electric trucks and buses can first operate — technologically and economically. The Mercedes-Benz eCitaro, for example, has been produced in series and delivered to customers since fall 2018. The FUSO eCanter and the Mercedes-Benz eActros are being thoroughly tested under real-life conditions by customers. Furthermore, in December 2018 the first Freightliner eM2 was handed over to the US company Penske Truck Leasing Corporation; the Freightliner eCascadia will follow. Customer tests are invaluable to Daimler Trucks, because every day, they deliver important additional new knowledge. This can include such information as which routes the customers drive, when they like to — or have to — charge, how long it actually takes to charge the truck sufficiently, and how the charging infrastructure has to be optimized for this.

E-Mobility Group

Since mid-2018, Daimler Trucks & Buses’ total know-how in the field of electric mobility has been concentrated under one roof in the E-Mobility Group. Here, regardless of brand or segment, the e-strategy for components and products is defined and implemented, and as in the platform strategy, an integrated electrical architecture is being developed. This maximizes the use of synergies and optimizes the application of investments.

Our electric vehicles at Daimler Trucks & Buses:

Mercedes-Benz

• July 2016: Presentation of the prototype of a heavy-duty electric truck.

• February 2018: Mercedes-Benz Trucks presents the eActros and announces an innovation fleet of ten electric trucks for customers in Germany and Switzerland. The development and testing is carried out as part of the Concept ELV2 financing project.

• June 2018: The first road tests of two eActros start in southwest Germany.

• September 2018: The first eActros is handed over to Hermes in Friedewald near Bad Hersfeld (Nordhessen). Start of the first use in real-life customer operation. Further deliveries to customers also take place in 2018.

• Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ objective is to realize locally emission-free and quiet driving with series-produced heavy-duty trucks —i.e. the eActros — in cities starting in 2021. And to do so with similar economics to those of a diesel truck.

• July 2018: The eCitaro celebrates its premiere. The eCitaro sets new standards from its individual design to its unique technology with outstanding thermal management and low weight.

• A special feature: The thermal management. Compared to the current Citaro with combustion engine, the energy requirement for heating, ventilation and climate control is reduced by around 40 percent. This extraordinary energy efficiency lays the foundation for achieving a viable driving range for the Citaro even under unfavorable conditions.

• Fall 2018: Series production launch of the eCitaro in the Mannheim bus plant.

• November 2018: The first series-produced model is handed over to the Hamburger Hochbahn AG. It is part of an order for 20 eCitaro buses — the largest individual order by a German transport provider for completely all-electric buses.

Freightliner

• June 2018: The eCascadia and the eM2 celebrate their premiere at the Capital Market Day in Portland

• Thanks to these two vehicle premieres, Daimler Trucks is now in pole position in the field of electric trucks in the US. Furthermore Daimler Trucks will offer the widest product range of electric commercial vehicles in North America of any OEM.

• The Freightliner eCascadia and the eM2 are aimed at customers’ need for electric commercial vehicles to serve fixed, predictable routes over daily runs that are mostly of between 70 and 250 kilometers.

• December 2018: The first eM2 was handed over to the Penske Truck Leasing Corporation. Penske Truck Leasing Corporation will use the electric truck in local distribution haulage in the northwestern US and California. During 2019 the Penske Truck Leasing Corporation will receive additional all-electric Freightliner trucks — both the medium-duty eM2 and eCascadia models for heavy-duty distribution haulage. The innovation fleet will comprise around 30 vehicles in total.

• Series production is planned by the year 2021.

Thomas Built Buses

• November 2017: Thomas Built Buses presents the first all-electric school bus for series production.

• September 2018: Daimler Trucks invests in the US company Proterra. Both partners pursue possible synergies in the electrification of school buses and the option of transferring Proterra’s already proven battery technology and drive train to the North American school bus market.

• From 2019: The Saf-T-Liner® eC2 Electric School Bus will go into small-batch series production.

FUSO

• The light-duty FUSO eCanter is the first all-electric truck from Daimler Trucks’ series production.

• July 2017: Start of eCanter production in Tramagal (for Europe & US) and Kawasaki (Japan)

• September 2017: World premiere, since then delivery to numerous customers worldwide

• October 2017: With the launch of the new E-FUSO product brand, which was presented for the first time at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, FUSO is underscoring its determination to electrify its entire product range.

• In the meantime, around 100 eCanters have been handed over to customers in the US, Japan, and Europe including UPS, Deutsche Post DHL, Wincanton, DPD, and the city of Lisbon

• Production of the next generation of the eCanter, the eCanter 2.0, is scheduled to start in 2021.
