My trip to India and what it taught me about digital tailwinds Dieter Zetsche | 02. November 2017

A couple of weeks ago I visited our colleagues at Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) in Bangalore, India. What can I say?

I was truly overwhelmed by hospitality and enthusiasm. These great people made my visit colorful in many ways - and I'm not just talking about my new turban.

The interactions and demonstrations throughout the day showed me: MBRDI is super in many fields such as computer-aided engineering and developing and designing products. But our Indian colleagues do much more than excel in these classic Engineering and R&D topics. They're also on the cutting edge when it comes to shaping the future of digitalization. That makes them forerunners in integrating the virtual world in our vehicles and our mobility business. They're applying, for example, deep learning in interior sensing.

Skills like these are at the heart of the four megatrends in the automotive industry: connectivity, autonomous driving, sharing and e-mobility, which we call “CASE”. So, my main take home message is this: Having a well-established R&D- and IT-division under one roof is a total winner. And that's one of the main reasons why MBRDI will continue to play a key role in the development of new digital technologies.

Apart from engineering and digital expertise, the thing that inspired me most was the vast number of dedicated people I had the pleasure to meet. They're young, talented and highly enthusiastic - they do an awesome job. They're an important part of our global Daimler family and their skills will help turn the “digital tsunami” into a “digital tailwind”!
