On course toward electric mobility

The Mercedes-Benz plants in Hamburg and in Berlin are continuing to strengthen themselves for the future.

In the years ahead, the Daimler plant in Hamburg will produce drive modules, electric rear axles, and lightweight components for the first electric vehicle of the product and technology brand EQ, as well as integrated starter alternators. The Berlin plant is expanding its product portfolio, and from the beginning of the next decade it will be responsible for the assembly of an electric drive module for the product and technology brand EQ as well.

Mercedes-Benz Cars is modernizing its worldwide powertrain plants and bolstering its international competitiveness with products that are geared toward the future. With these future scenarios, we’ve put the plants on a solid foundation and given them an opportunity to benefit from the new technologies of electric mobility.

On the path toward electric mobility, the Mercedes-Benz plant in Hamburg is closely cooperating with the Mercedes-Benz plant in Berlin. The two plants have been under joint management (by René Reif) since August 2017. This has made the two plants, which are part of the powertrain manufacturing network of Mercedes-Benz Cars, even stronger and enabled them to benefit from each other. Their sharing of best practices and know-how, as well as the harmonization of existing processes, are creating synergies that help to boost efficiency and are ideally preparing them for the transformation of both facilities into production plants for electric mobility.

Mercedes-Benz Cars is investing approximately €500 million in each of the component plants in Berlin and Hamburg as part of the future scenarios that the company decided on together with the Works Council in 2015 and 2016. With this investment it is sustainably reinforcing its position in future-oriented fields such as electric mobility and lightweight construction.
