An Awning for the Little Ones

Overwhelmed parents and separations are often detrimental to children. The youth and family support arm of Diakoniewerk Simeon takes care of the little ones in order to safeguard their well-being despite their unfortunate family situations.

Diakoniewerk Simeon is a charitable organization that supports and represents people in need on behalf of the German Evangelical Church. The organization is represented at more than 100 locations in Berlin and Brandenburg, and works in the fields of care and support, youth and family support, social issues and integration. It also runs childcare facilities.

The "Educational Support" department is part of the organization's youth and family support activities. The department supports children from families in which it is necessary to temporarily separate the family in the interest of the children's safety.

The infant group in Berlin for children between 0 and 6 years of age has a large garden area where the children like to dig or play football. However, the children are not adequately protected against UV rays, particularly in the vicinity of the big sand pit. Exposure to sun as a child can have severe long-term consequences. "Excessive exposure to sun in childhood is one of the main risk factors for skin cancer," warns Ulrich Fegeler, for example, the national spokesperson for the German Professional Association of Doctors for Children and Young People (BVKJ).

That is why Diakonie Simeon is planning to erect an awning. The entire sand pit area, which includes the adjoining garden area, playground and lawn, is to be protected from the sun's rays by the awning in the future.

Daimler ProCent is contributing 2,850 euros to the cost of buying and assembling the awning.
