Electrified on the highway Freightliner eCascadia and eM2

Electric trucks on U.S. highways are no longer merely a futuristic vision. In 2018, Freightliner will put two new, eco-friendly family members on the street: the eCascadia and the eM2. These two trucks offer emission-free freight hauling for both regional and local applications.

In June 2018, Daimler Trucks unveiled two new Freightliner electric trucks at the Capital Market & Technology Day at Portland International Raceway: the Freightliner eCascadia, a Class 8 heavy-duty battery electric truck, and the Freightliner eM2 106, an all-electric solution for the medium-duty segment. The eCascadia and eM2 join Thomas Built Buses’ Saf-T-Liner C2 electric school bus, also known as Jouley, to create the widest model range of electric commercial vehicles of any OEM in North America.

Customer fleet in the starting blocks

In the course of the year 2018 we plan to deliver an Electric Innovation Fleet of 30 vehicles to customers for further testing under real-world operating conditions. Furthermore, Daimler Trucks is testing eTrucks in co-operation with FUSO, Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner - from the U.S. to Asia and Europe.

We expect increasing demand for electric trucks and buses, and are also receiving these signals from our customers. Only manufacturers who lead the field in both conventional drive systems and electric drive systems are able to offer convincing solutions, technically and business-wise. With regard to conventional powertrains, we have always benefited from our worldwide platform strategy. We will also be taking this approach for electric drive systems in the future. To this end, we are establishing the E-Mobility Group in which our experts from all functions around the world will work together on the best e-systems.

Based on successful models

The Freightliner eCascadia is based on the new Cascadia, the most successful heavy-duty long-haul truck in the North American market. In its first generation, the eCascadia will offer up to 730 peak horsepower. The eCascadia’s batteries, with 550 kWh, will provide enough energy for a range of up to 250 miles (400 kilometers) and can be recharged to 80 percent in about 90 minutes, allowing it to cover yet another 200 miles (320 kilometers).

The Freightliner eM2 106 is ideally suited for local distribution of food and beverage goods, as well as for last-mile deliveries. The batteries of the first generation eM2 provide 325 kWh for up to 480 horsepower. The range of the eM2 is around 230 miles (370 kilometers), and the vehicle’s batteries can be recharged to around 80 percent within just 60 minutes, enough for a range of an additional 184 miles (300 kilometers).

With the two e-trucks from Freightliner, the Mercedes-Benz eActros, the FUSO eCanter, the fully-electric Mercedes-Benz Citaro city bus and the Thomas Built Saf-T Liner C2 Jouley school bus, Daimler Trucks & Buses already has the broadest portfolio of fully-electric commercial vehicles to be found anywhere. In addition, Daimler Trucks is establishing a global organization for e-mobility
