Mercedes-Benz A-Class

The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class meets the highest standards with regard to safety, comfort, agility, and design, and was also analysed comprehensively in terms of its environmental impact over the entire lifecycle.

Over the entire life cycle of the A 180 d (with dual clutch transmission: combined fuel consumption (diesel): 4.5–4.1 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 118–108 g/km*) the life cycle inventory analysis yields an environmental input of approximately 25 tons of CO₂ [1] and around 46 kilograms NOx [1].

Steel/ferrous materials account for slightly the half of the vehicle weight (52.8 percent) in the A 180 d. These are followed by polymer materials at 21.4 percent and light alloys as the third-largest group (11.9 percent).

In the new A-Class a total of 118 components plus small parts such as push buttons, plastic nuts and cable fasteners with a total weight of 58.3 kilogrammes can be produced partially from less resource consuming materials.

A project utilising lightweight construction and natural fibres was successfully implemented with the newly developed reinforcement frame of the sunroof. The conventional steel sheet frame was replaced by a natural fibre mat in combination with a thermosetting binding agent – apart from conserving resources, up to 50 percent weight savings were achieved.

Since 2016 all new Mercedes-Benz cars are awarded with the Seal of Quality from the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF). The ECARF Seal of Quality is used by ECARF to designate products that have been scientifically tested and proven to be suitable for allergy sufferers.
